Prostate cancer is considered as one of the leading killer illnesses among males over the age of 40. In fact, it is considered as the most fatal non-skin cancer disease. This doesn't mean that it's untreatable, though. And this doesn't mean that mortality is certain once the said disease is contracted.

The fact of the matter is: prostate cancer can be prevented, and once contracted, it can be cured. But there are some conditions to satisfy, however, and they would demand a certain degree of commitment from people who are susceptible to the disease. You don't have to be a part of a sad statistic. You could do something to effect prostate cancer prevention!

The first thing you need to muster is awareness. You have to realize that no man is spared from the possibility of developing prostate cancer, more so when close family members have succumbed to this disease, and even more so when you're above the age of 40. Only by accepting these facts will you be able to accept the fact that the perils to your life are real. This should be the start of your campaign to prevent the development of prostate cancer.

The second thing you need to conjure is courage. The best treatment against prostate cancer is early detection. Patients suffering from this illness who seek medical attention within the first quarter of the tumor's development have a 100% chance of surviving the ordeal. But before the disease can be detected, medical aid should be sought. Neb who discover the presence of the tumor at the latter stages of its development only have a 34% chance of surviving for another 5 years.

Knowing the risk factors involved would also help efficient prostate cancer prevention. These risk factors are:

- Being over the age of 40;
- Belonging to a family with a history of prostate cancer;
- Experiencing benign prostatic hypertrophy, or prostate enlargement; and
- Some environmental causes that have recently been discovered, such as dietary animal fat. These have not been conclusively verified, however.

Aside from early detection, many experts suggest a balanced, healthy diet as a great aid in prostate cancer prevention. The American Cancer Society recommends an increase in your intake of vegetables and fruits, especially those which are rich with lycopenes that help protect the integrity of the DNA such as tomatoes, watermelon and grapefruit; and a decrease in your diet of red meat.

Some prescribed drugs, such as finasteride, is also known to decrease the risk of developing prostate cancer.

The bottom line is that: yes, prostate cancer prevention is very possible, and yes, practicing such is very much in your hands.
